INSTALLATION OF GEMFIRE ENTERPRISE ---------------------------------- This document describes installation of GemFire Enterprise 5.5.1 build 37 To install GemFire, you will need: * Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 or higher. Make sure to have a Java JDK or JRE version 1.4.2 or higher on your system and it's Java version has been updated as needed according to the Java Sun Alert 102836 described at: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Intl/alert.html Minimum System Requirements * Solaris 9 Sun SPARC Blade 1000 with V9 instruction set, 1 GB RAM * Windows XP SP2 on Intel 2 GHz Pentium 4 (or equivalent) 1 GB RAM * Linux Intel 2GHz Pentium 4 (or equivalent) 1 GB RAM Each platform has its own installer: * Linux GemFire551_Installer_linux.jar * Solaris GemFire551_Installer_sol.jar * Windows GemFire551_Installer_win.jar Use the installer corresponding to your destination operating system. This ensures that you get the correct support binaries for your platform. Including: * native OS statistics * the bundled JRE * VSD tool If your destination platform is not one of the ones listed, you can install anyway using one of the installers provided and run the product without the support binaries. For more information on this, see the product documentation for Pure Java. Running the Installer --------------------- Invoke the installer with this command line: Windows: %JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe -jar GemFire551_Installer_win.jar UNIX and Linux: ${JAVA_HOME}/bin/java -jar GemFire551_Installer_win.jar 1) A License Agreement (EULA) will be displayed 2) You will then be prompted to choose an installation directory. The product will be expanded into the directory specified. The total disk space required is approximately 180 Megabytes. If you have difficulties getting the installer to work correctly you have the option of unzipping the jar file directly using any common zip extraction tool. Optional Installer System Properties ------------------------------------ -Dgemfire.installer.directory= Specifies the directory to install GemFire into and causes the installer to run in an unattended mode sutable for automation. The directory /GemFire551 will be created. The installation will fail rather than overwrite preexisting files. -Dgemfire.installer.opensource=true Many open source licenses require that vendors who use or modify their libraries make that code available. This property installs this source code. An additional directory will be created within the GemFire installation called opensource. Obtaining a GemFire License --------------------------- GemFire Enterprise requires a license to run. If this is an evaluation installation then GemStone Systems should have provided an evaluation license at the time you received this installer. The license file is named gemfireLicense.zip and should be placed at the top of the GemFire product tree. Please copy the gemfireLicense.zip into the product tree now. Documentation ------------- Once the product is installed documentation is available in docs/index.html Uninstalling GemFire -------------------- To uninstall GemFire delete the product tree. No additional registry entries or system modifications are needed.
